Posted by Marisa Heinze on

We look forward to Christmas for weeks and then the hustle and bustle is over within a few days.

We hope you had a nice christmas eve and some relaxing holidays with family or friends. Before the year ends, however, there is another highlight: New Year's Eve. Regardless of whether you are celebrating the end of the year comfortably on a small scale or in a larger group, we have summarized 5 great tips for a perfect and sustainable New Year's Eve:

New Year's Eve: that means for many: rockets, raclette or fondue and just before 12, Dinner for One. These traditions may seem very beautiful at first glance, but some of them have negative consequences for you and the environment. Fireworks should be avoided for the following reasons:

        • Waste of money
At the turn of 2018/19, according to statistics, we spent around 133 million euros on New Year's Eve fireworks items in Germany. Instead of literally squandering this money, we could donate it to social initiatives that strive for a greener and fairer 2020.
        • Animals suffer from the noise and bright flashes
Anyone who has their own pet knows their panic on New Year's Eve. Not only domestic but wild animals suffer from the shootings too. This sometimes even triggers orientation disorders.
        • Risk of injury during manufacture and use
Again and again, horror reports dominate the headlines, in which serious injuries caused by the negligent use of fireworks are reported. However, what is an exception for us, is the sad everyday life in the manufacturing factories located in developing countries. The rockets are mostly produced there by adults and children under catastrophic conditions. Uncontrolled explosions do often cost many human lives.
        • Harmful fine dust pollution
On New Year's Eve the exposure to harmful fine dust rises explosively. In many places the fine dust concentration in the air is higher than the rest of the year. Many cities rule with a ban on rockets in the inner city area.
        • Waste pollution from rocket remains
While the light spectacle of a single rocket usually lasts only a few seconds, the garbage that then remains on the streets is often visible for days.

        Entertainment:

The evening activities looks very similar for many on New Year's Eve. However, similar to fireworks, many customs and traditions are not particularly environmentally friendly and sometimes even harmful to health. We have put together a few ideas for you to help you set up a sustainable entertainment program.

        • Pouring wax instead of pouring lead
Lead casting is not only very dangerous due to the hot lead and the open flame, the vapors that are produced during melting are also very toxic. Since the solidified lead may only be disposed in special waste, lead casting has been prohibited in Germany since 2018. If you still want to hold onto the tradition, you can also pour candle wax in ice water instead of lead. This gives the same results, but is less dangerous and not harmful to health / the environment. Candles made from beeswax or vegetable oils such as rapeseed, sunflowers or soy are best suited for this.
        • Secret Santa with scrap instead of new products
We all know it. Finding a suitable secret santa gift that is not only cheap but also useful is not that easy. Especially on occasions, where the "santas" don't know each other that well, the little gifts often end up catching dust on the cupboard afterwards. But it doesn't have to go that way. What about using junk instead of new products this year?
For the Secret Santa Scrap version each guest brings an item that he no longer needs at home. This then comes under the hammer in a fun dice game. Click here to read the detailed game instructions.
You don't just get rid of your own unloved junk, you also ensure a fun and entertaining evening program. Tears of laughter pre-programmed!

        • Slide-show
The time between dinner and the chime at 12 can become very long without a small entertainment program. How about an interactive photo and film evening, to which each guest contributes. In this way, the party planning is not left to you alone and a weird little short film is created with the funniest stories and shared experiences from the past. You will be surprised what moments your friends can remember that you may have long forgotten.

          Greeting the new year

In the first section of this article, we already pointed out the problem of fireworks. If you still can't do without the light and fire spectacle, here are a few alternatives:

          - Decorate your garden festively with wax or resin torches. With their cozy, warm light, they provide beautiful lighting for many hours, are reusable and therefore much more environmentally friendly than all single-use rockets.
          - Flashlight attachments instead of sparklers and glow sticks.
          - If you don't want to do without rockets, you should visit a public firework display. Professional pyrotechnicians come up with impressive programs for this, which the private builder never comes close to.
