Organic cotton

In over 80 countries, cotton grows in tropical and subtropical regions. The largest producers worldwide are India, China, USA, Brazil and the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. In many developing countries, cotton is the most important foreign exchange earner. It is often grown in remote rural areas and can help to integrate rural households into economic cycles. The main advantages of cotton are its naturalness, high elasticity and biodegradability.

But the cultivation of conventional cotton also poses problems for people and the environment. Problems of conventional cotton:

  • Use of toxic pesticides and chemical fertilisers
  • Cultivation in monocultures
  • Use of genetically manipulated seeds
  • High water consumption
  • Exploitation of cotton farmers and their dependence on large seed companies

Since we do not want to do without the many advantages of the soft natural fibre for the production of our yoga collection, we only use organic cotton for the OGNX products. Farmers with organic certification agree to have an independent certification body check at least once a year whether the strict regulations of organic farming are being observed. This can eliminate a large part of the problems mentioned above. You can see why OGNX also uses organic cotton here:

  • No genetic manipulation:
In organic cotton cultivation, genetic modification of the seeds is prohibited. In this way, the natural reproduction of the plants is promoted, as well as the habitat of the nearby plants and animals is protected.
  • Less water consumption:
Although the organic cotton plants also need to be watered frequently, the consumption is considerably lower than in conventional cultivation. One reason for this is that the soil can store more water due to the crop rotation (changing plants) that is common in organic farming. On the other hand, rainwater stored in organic cotton fields is often used for irrigation.
  • No chemical pesticides:
Instead of chemical pesticides, natural fertilizers are used during cultivation and biodiversity is preserved through crop rotation. The use of toxic chemicals is also prohibited in the subsequent processing of the cotton yarn.
  • Supporting smaller farmers:
In organic cotton farming, farmers receive better wages. By being independent of large seed and pesticide corporations, small-scale farming structures are also promoted in this way.
